For this week’s pop culture topic I will be discussing about vehicles in general these days and how they don’t last like older models or foreign vehicles. I know it may be on the outskirts of the targeted material but I believe that it is a relevant pop culture topic in today’s society. I believe it to be a legitimate topic because vehicles and usage portray most, if not all of the elements that define pop culture.
First of all, popular culture is defined as the system of attitudes, behavior patterns, customs, tastes, and beliefs (Browne, 2005) .It also states that it is the entertainment, diversions, icons, rituals, and actions that shape a society’s everyday world (Browne, 2005) . This verifies that my topic about vehicles is legitimate. The main thing that I want to express is that vehicles that are made in this era, do not last nearly as long as ones from the 1960’s era for example. The metals that are used are less stable and rust out much quicker. The reasoning for this I believe is because it is lighter (the steel used) than from other generations. The older cars where made solid, and they were made to last. That is why you see so many muscle cars for instance.
The way the economy has become and as well as the market has played crucial effects on this in my opinion. Not only is it cheaper for them because they use lighter and cheaper parts, but I think they plan this for a reason. If the vehicles break down and rust out, that just means you will have to buy another. For example I have noticed many newer pickups that are rusted out more than a model from 15 years ago. Many people use trucks and light vehicles as a means of life and work, so this could affect them very negatively. When I buy something, I expect it to last as do most people. But the trend that I am seeing more and more is just staggering in my opinion. I’m a car person, so I feel strongly about the matter and that is why I am expressing it. If anyone reads this, just take a look around at vehicles and you will notice what I am talking about.
I agree! I see it all of the time. My mom's car is a perfect example. Around the gas tank area, the whole thing is rusted out and I see a lot of other cars that show the same thing. I just wonder what causes it and how come it wasn't like that back in the day with the older cars???
